Wicked Movie Slated for 2010

For those of you who don’t know, Wicked is a wildly successful play based on the book with the same title that is the prequel to the Wizard of Oz told from the perspective of the (not so) Wicked Witch. Now, the story has been taken up by Marc Platt’s production company (the same as the production company as Rachel Getting Married) and a movie is scheduled to debut in 2010.
So, the only real surprise here is that this hasn’t been done yet. The book was initially going to be turned into a movie, but it was decided that the story would be much better as a live Broadway musical. Now that the play has been out for a couple of years, and has been so wildly successful, it seems like it would be a smooth transition into movie musical (I can’t imagine that the movie would be non-musical). Now, Marc Platt and Stephen Schwartz (songwriter for the Wicked musical) are just waiting for the right timing.
The play, in my opinion, was magnificent. The story is fun, the music is beautiful, and the costumes are absolutely incredible (my favorite part!). Although I do believe that the movie is a good idea, it is going to take a lot for the movie to live up to the acclaimed play. We’ll just have to wait and see.
